Early in the pandemic, the gift of time spent along Seattle’s shores rekindled my personal relationship with the waters that sustain and connect us all. A daily practice of observation and gratitude shifted into a lens of curiosity, rapture and reverence.

Shot on 35mm, this body of work explores the intimacy of our relationship to water through expressive environmental portraiture.

For one night only, an empty industrial building in South Seattle was converted into a gallery space. We had food and music and a 12’ projection screen hanging from the ceiling that people danced in front of and behind of, shadow puppeting, swimming, kissing and playing with a looping video of endlessly unique water textures.

Wells partnered with Puget Soundkeeper and provided them a booth space in order to connect Seattleites with a local NGO whose water advocacy work is crucial to the well-being of the region at large. Water is foundational and how cultures treat, respect, and value that resource is inextricably linked to our health and the ecosystems we inhabit.

Every single piece sold that night. However, additional prints are available at the print shop below.

Millenia ago we left the sea,
and we continue to be,
bodies of water
